The Rona Highland fold was established in 1996, when Highland cattle were re-introduced to the Island of Rona. A pedigree breeding herd was built up with original stock from the Ardbhan Fold, North Uist.
The Rona Highland Fold have bred successfully on Rona for over a decade. They have been & valuable asset (and the main mechanism) in helping the successful regeneration of the woodland on the Island.
In 2009 this project reached a stage where the cattle are no longer required in such numbers, we have reduced the stock and removed the cattle from the main part of the Island.
To mark the successful conclusion of the Highland cattle project and the sale of the majority of the fold to new homes, we will be launching our 2009 stamps shortly which feature some of the bovine characters that have roamed the island for 10 years and became a familiar sight to the island's visitors.
